Seams in Granite

We just had new granite countertops installed in our kitchen, and two seams were necessary because of the size and curves in the countertops. The seams are quite visible, and feel rough to the touch - how can we tell if it was poor installation or if all seams are visible like these? Do you have any suggestions? - Patrick

Hello Patrick,

Granite countertop seams should be smooth to the touch and no more than 1/16″ wide. There is no written rule about this but this is the quality standard in the industry. The joint should be filled flush with epoxy in a color that best matches the general granite color. If you are not happy with the color, ask the installer to redo it. This is not difficult. Sometimes the joint can be made smoother with the epoxy as well.

If the joint is still rough, then you will need to have the seams professionally ground down and re-polished. This is not easy to do correctly and even impossible with some homogenous colors.

Best wishes,
Tom Cordova

  1. i am very upset about my newly installed granite countertop. i want to ask you if there should be a visable seam at the small part of the sink…my countertop is black galaxy and 116 inches long and i just don’t know why we couldn’t have goten a piece large enough so that we didn’t have a seam. when i called the place where i got the stone he came to assess the seam because i had told him how horrible it was and he told me when a piece is not big enough you have seams..only this seam is kind of jaggered looking and right down the center of the sink. what do you think about this? should i persue this further and have them refund my money or do you think this is acceptable? just to go over this again…there is a seam, visible in the frount of the sink, not smooth on this black galaxy granite. i don’t know what to do about it and is this normal.. please let me know. thank you soooo much for your help, iam at a loss. mary anne colombo
