Color differences with an Ogee edge?
Dear Tom, I am searching the internet in desperation, as Hawaian/Tropical Green Granite was installed today with an Ogee edge in our new high end kitchen. We were told that the Ogee edge might be slightly lighter green in color for a time period-until it cured/oxidized/was exposed to the elements. It arrived with two Ogee edges (84″ and 86″) a pale gray, blue, red streaks-very drastic and obvious color difference from the warm and dark green/ cranberry streaks of the top. Other edge surfaces are varied and have only some of the pale gray blue discoloration. The squared off drop to the recessed sink is only the “lighter green” color as promised. We have been told that the Ogee problem is not a resin problem and that Ager and minwax were already tried in a small section, but did nothing. Therefore, we must wait and in time it will age and may already be in the process of change. Does this sound feasible to you? We have not paid any money and will most likely be holding back some money tomorrow. How long should we put in the guarantee period for this to change?
Thank you for any and all comments. – Nancy
Hello Nancy. The specific problem you are describing mostly occurs in the Green Granite from China and the Tropical Green from India. Both are very beautiful but have iron and mica minerals that create ‘browning’ affect on the stone after exposed to sunlight. The discoloration can occur within 30 days when exposed to a summer sun in Southern California for example.
The only time a difference occurs on an edge detail in this specific circumstance is when then this particular granite has been left out side for a while, prior to fabrication. If this granite was stored inside, then the edge detail, after grinding, would have the same minimal degree of sunlight exposure as the top surface. Likewise, if the entire countertop was expose to sunlight after fabrication, then the gradually color change would not be unpleasing.
The Ager product is excellent but it will not work for this circumstance because it is primarily a darkening agent. Take this information for what is worth and I wish you the best.

Tom, We just installed granite top using Hurricane granite. This is mix of black and golden swirls. We had Ogee edge made. Top is beautiful golds, tans, blacks, but edge is very white with some light black and very light gold. Deeper golds, blacks don’t penetrate more than few millimeters. Anything we can do to make edge match the top color? Will color change with time? Thanks for all and any comments, Sam

Dear Tom,
I’m wanting to redo my countertops, backsplash, and floors in my kitchen.
I’d like granite for the countertops, porcelain tile for the floor, and i’m not sure about the backsplash area.
My appliances are white, and my cabinets are maple with a colonial maple stain, yellow undertones.
I’ve looked at so many products, colors, etc., and i am completely overwhelmed.
I honestly have no idea how to put this all together. Please help!

We recently had “waterfall” installed and the ogee edges look much more white/ creamy like someone had spread some regular white colgate toothpaste on the edges. You can’t see any depth like on the top of the countertop. Waterfall has irregular color/ patterns, but the ogee edge look is not anywhere on the top.
Could the local granite fabricators that cut and installed the granite not washed the “dust/powder” off the edge properly before they sealed it? (The underside of the granite reveals a bit of white dust/powder stuck to it) Is there anything that can be done? Can the ogee edge, even though the whole countertop has been sealed, be buffed and resealed??
Thanks!

I had 92 sf of Delicatus granite installed two weeks ago. Suddenly green spots are appearing. There are five now and they range in size of 3-4″. They are at present all located on the bar area, along the edges. Obviously I am sick about it and neither the supplier or fabricator had a clue what it is over the phone. They are coming out in a few days.
Do you have any suggestions. Thank you for your advice.

I just had a granite countertop installed. The ogee edge looked milky and
appeared to look like wax. The installed came back and polished the edge
again and it helped a little and put a sealer on the ogee edge. The edge
still does not look the same color as the countertop. The color of granite
is Black Ubatuba. Also on top of countertop there is some open pits that
can be seen and finger nail depth pits the installer said that granite is like
a piece of swiss cheese and that is normal. I do not like the looks of open
pits that look like a damaged the top. The installer fixed a few pits and
they look better but he missed pits and said if he fixed one another would
appear somewhere else. Is this what granite should look like??? The edge
and the pits are not something I thought I would have to worry about. I
thought the only problem would be seams and this is not the case with
my granite.

Recently had granite countertops installed. The supplier, not the fabricator told us that certain granites (silhouette) need an extra finishing on the og edge so that the countertop color and the edges are the same color. We chose Mascarello instead which is the same category “V” as the silhouette. We have tried ager and it did nothing. The edges look dull and have a rough finish. We believe that our fabricator did not finish the og edge properly.
properly polished with the “special edging tool” that the supplier spoke of?
Eagerly awaiting your response. Kathy

I have previously posted this question. Wondering if you could kindly respond as I am truly in need of a professional answer. We recently had granite countertops installed. The L shape is Mascarello and the island is black galaxy.
Surface color is beautiful on the Mascarello, (it is beige, rust, black with some brown) The ogee edges are rough, dull and off white in most of the areas. The black galaxy also has a dull finish on the edges. The supplier told our fabricator that he needed a “special edge finishing tool” to match the surface colors. It is apparent to us that the edges were not properly polished. Ager did nothing to improve the color. From what the supplier told us (not the fabricator) some granites need extra work on an ogee edge. We are still working to resolve this issue with the fabricator.
Any answers you could provide would really help. Thanks, Kathy

Dear Tom,
My husband and I are re-doing our kitchen this year. We will be installing butterscotch stained oak cabinets, hard wood floors in the same color, Benjamin Moore “navajo white” on the walls and biscuit colored appliances. We would like to install granite countertops but are having trouble deciding what color and grain. We would also like to maximize our re-sale value if we decide to relocate in the future. We were looking at Giallo Vincenza and Shalimar Gold. What do you think of these choices? Should we go dark, or stay light and neutral? Sould the grain be course or fine? Our kitchen is rather small, however, like the needs of all wives, it has to be perfect. What are your suggestions?
Many thanks to you,
Kristine

Hello, we just installed Typhoon Bordeau Granite kitchen counter tops. We have maple cream colored cabinets w/ a butterscoth glaze. We are getting santos mahogany flooring. The back splash will be 4×4 natural tumbled marble tile biege color w/ a 4″ darker accent middle border. My concern is the granit seems to have a bit to much white in it. I feel if it was a bit darker cream color it would have been better. But we are going to be getting all stainless steel appliances, so maybe this will be fine? The floors are not in yet, so maybe we will be OK with granite xolor because the floor will be darker? Can granite be made darker with any product available? Or will it darken over time? We don’t get alot of sunlight in the kitchen.
Thanks, Tim
