Scratches in Granite
Hello, I just moved into a brand new home and the granite that was put in for us has tiny scratches all over the surface – just about. The fellow who put it in claims that is normal for some stones. I am hoping to get the opinion of another expert to see if this guy is cheating me or telling me the truth. Also, is there any way to fix this. Is this something that you could help me with? Thanks so much, Sara
It is a difficult to comment on this issue without seeing the scratches. However, scratches are not normal in Granite. If they are natural fissures, then that should be acceptable, but scratches come from either poor quality finishing at the overseas supplier or miss-handling of the slabs at the local fabrication facility. A good way to tell is the depth of the scratch. If it is deep and pronounced, then it was caused by mishandling of the slabs overseas or locally. If the scratch is light and circular than it was done during polishing overseas.

Greetings from frozen ass Regina Canada,
I have been a granite worker for 8 years and have run into a delema with a black galaxy job I recently fabricated. The job was installed without a hitch, but I recently found out that a tile contractor went in after and scratched the hell out of the B.G. tops while installing the ceramic tile. After my company told the home owner the tile installer was liable, the tile guy went to another granite company whom I used to work for. This granite company used MY name in their referall and told the home owner I could remedy the multiple scratches by suface polishing and a replacement would not be necassary! Now I’m sure that no one in the stone trade would want to surface polish at least 10 linear ft of blackgalaxy, on site nontheless. Could you please give me some advice on how to addess this situation. (I really dont want to surface polish all that galaxy.) The tile guys insurance should take care of the replacement but hes fighting it for obvious reasons. I would like to hear back from you.
A fellow manipulator of the Earth,
Gareth.
P.S. time is of the essence on this matter
P.P.S I really appreciate what your doing and love the fact that other stone workers are out there trying to help/educate
Rock On!
(sorry for the cheesiness)
