Removing Glue From Granite

I just had 3cm New Venetian Gold granite put in my kitchen, the installers used acetone to remove glue and then sealed it. I am still trying to remove glue and see greasy looking smudges on it in certain lights! Help what do I do to clean and protect it!

Marcia

Hello Marcia,

Acetone should have done the job. However, I recommend the following: First, use a razor blade to scrape off the glue. Acetone will not remove heavy glue deposits. Then, either use acetone again or use Windex. If the Windex does not work, use a strong solution of liquid dish washing soap and warm water. Use a green scrub pad and go over the whole top. It is important to really get all the soap off when you are done scrubbing because you are going to need to reseal the granite.

After it is all dry and clean, you should not see any film or smudges. Now, reseal according to the advice in my Article, Sealing and Cleaning Your Granite.

Best wishes,
Tom Cordova

  1. Hi,
Last month I had granite Kitchen Counters and Island installed, while
standing or looking at it in different way I notice a spotting or seaking like firm or water spots. The color is called Geriba should I try to remove it or call the installor.

  2. My contractor installed my blue eyes granite countertop. In the process of applying glue to the granite and the granite backsplash, some of the glue got onto the countertop but he did not clean them up immediately. After a week or so, he tried to remove the glue with a razor blade but could not get rid of the stubborn glue. How do we remove this safely without damaging the granite? Thank you very much.

  3. I had absolute black installed in my bar area and also an island. I used another color on the countertops and love it. I noticed on the bar that there are some stains and I am pretty sure that they are from lime juice. Is there any way to remove these and could you please recommend a sealer(if there is one that would prevent this).

  4. Dear Tom,

We have been in our new house for about 7 months now, and we have the Giallo Ornamental granite in our kitchen countertops and island. The granite is supposed to be sealed. Just this week, I noticed some irregular brownish lines, rings on the island surface at where my son usually sits to eat, and there are also some similar lines in other areas of the countertop. I’m not sure whether these are stains or something that’s bleeding through the granite? I’ve always used placemats and coasters on the granite, and clean with water after cooking/eating.

Also, I noticed some cloudy water spots on the granite. Is there a way to remove these from the granite?

In addition, there are multiple small dents on the granite surface, which can be felt if I run my fingers over the surface. Would a resealing and repolishing help smooth out the dents?

  5. just put in a giallo cecilia for a customer. Installer chip surface when they put it in. any help or advise will be much apreciated!

  6. Trying to restore 4′ x 7′ White Carerra Marble panels. They have been installed since 1926. Is there anything we can do to bring back the original color? They have gone dull over the years and have a yellowish appearance. This is a heritage building that requires restoration. We have honed it with diamond pads and hand tool.

    Regards,

  8. I’ve recently got a new granite island worktop and it’s black granite. The granite was sealed when installed. Since the installation, I have noticed that there are two stains on the island, the stains have lightened the colour of the marble and are quite noticeable. The stains are from apple juice. Do you recommend a way to remove these stains from the granite without discolouring the granite? Is acetone or peroxide safe to use? Thanks
